About Rhenen
Rhenen is a town and municipality inside the Dutch province of Utrecht. The municipality has 20,012 populations and has a place of 42.99 km². In addition to the city of Rhenen, the municipality consists of the villages of Elst and Achterberg. Rhenen cooperates with the municipalities of Veenendaal, Wageningen, Ede, Barneveld, Nijkerk, Scherpenzeel and Renswoude in the regional FoodValley vicinity. Rhenen obtained town rights in 1258 after the region was first mentioned in 855 as villa Hreni. In the Middle Ages, Rhenen changed into the maximum superior factor of aid for the bishop of Utrecht in his steady struggle against the counts, later dukes, of Gelre.
The bishop owned the Ter Horst citadel right here, which was in the end demolished in 1543. After the centralization of the authorities with the aid of Emperor Charles V, Rhenen remained a quiet garrison city for centuries, one of the 5 towns of the Foundation gambling a modest position inside the administration of the region.
