About De Adriaan

De Adriaan is a windmill within the Netherlands that burnt down in 1932 and was rebuilt in 2002. The original windmill dates from 1779 and the mill has been a distinct part of the skyline of Haarlem for centuries. The windmill was built on the foundations of the Goevrouwetoren via Adriaan de Booys, an business producer from Amsterdam.

The Goevrouwetoren, or Goede Vrouwtoren have been the northern assist of the town's Catrijnenpoort, a defencework over the River Spaarne. By the late 18th century, the gate become redundant due to the enlargement of the city, and de Booys sold the tower and the land around it from the municipality of Haarlem on April 24, 1778. By reinforcing the rules with wood helping poles, the mill changed into constructed to 34 metres above the extent of the river, and above the encompassing metropolis. De Adriaan changed into formally opened on May 19, 1779. De Booys changed into granted permission to construct a windmill to supply cement, paint, and tanbark. The windmill became built below the supervision of miller Henricus Ruijsch from Waddinxveen.
