Assen

Assen is a municipality and a city in the northeastern Netherlands, and is the capital of the province of Drenthe. It obtained city rights in 1809. Assen is understood for TT Circuit Assen, the motorcycle racing circuit, wherein at the final Sunday in June the Dutch TT is run; and also for the once a year Assen Dance Festival. The records of the capital of Drenthe can be traced returned to as a minimum 1258, when a new place had to be observed for Marienkamp Abbey, which had initially been built near Coevorden as a penalty for the slaughter in 1227 of the army of the Bishop of Utrecht at the palms of Drenthe's peasants, in what has end up known as the Battle of Ane – a struggle, by the way, in which the bishop became killed.

His successor ordered the nunnery to be constructed as a penalty. As it became placed in a barren peat area, which additionally happened to flood every now and then, a better place had to be found.
