About Thaipooyam Mahotsavam

The Thaipooyam Mahotsavam Festival pulls you in with the throbbing thumps of the chenda drums while the cymbals intersperse each development of the moving enthusiasts bearing the kavadis. All present appear to be controlled by a celestial soul that causes them shed their natural weights and delight in a powerful ecstasy. The rich hues and craze prompted by the vivacious execution of the lovers accuses the environment of an otherworldly vitality as thousands assemble here.

The occasion is the Thaipooyam Festival of the Koorkancherry Sree Maheswara Temple, celebrated in January/February in love of Lord Subrahmanya, child of Lord Shiva. The Kavadiyattom exhibitions which feature a rich dynamic quality of hues is one of the real attractions of this celebration.

The 'kavadi' is a lavishly enhanced wooden curve that is carried on the shoulders. The procedures start toward the beginning of the day where exhibitions, for example, ambalakkavadi sanctuary and pookkavadi blossoms are framed based on the state of the kavadi. Firecrackers stamp the finish of the celebration and the recollections made are precious.
