About Jardin Botanico de Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos Province Botanical Garden, formally, Jardin Botanico de Cienfuegos, also referred to as Jardin Botanico Soledad, is positioned 14 kilometers from Cienfuegos town centre. With ninety seven hectares it’s one of the oldest institutions of its type at the island, based in 1901 by means of Edwin F. Atkins and his wife. They arrived in Cuba in 1899 on the lookout for the island's maximum valuable commodity; sugarcane. Atkins built the “Soledad” sugar mill and soon after a research center dedicated to investigation and enhancement of sugar cane beneath the name: "Harvard Botanical Station for Tropical Research and Sugar Cane Investigation".

Mr. And Mrs. Atkins have been also fond of plant gathering and soon afterwards began a tropical and rare species garden within the outside in their estate in which vegetation from as some distance as India and China have been grown in tropical Cuba. Today the garden has a massive collection of tropical uncommon flowers clustered in 670 genera and one hundred twenty five botanical families. Among the most whole collections are orchids, arms, ficuses and bamboos.
