Riemst

Riemst is a town and municipality in the southeast of the province of Limburg in Belgium . The municipality has more than 16,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the eponymous canton . In addition, it belongs to the judicial canton of Tongeren-Voeren . Since 1 May 2018, the municipality of Riemst no longer belongs to the judicial canton of Tongeren-Voeren, seat of Tongeren, but to the canton of Bilzen. The oldest remains of human habitation date from the culture of the band ceramics , from which time remains of a settlement were found. Important remains from Roman times were discovered, such as a Roman tomb from the early 2nd century under a former tumulus .

55 objects were found there in 1935. The foundations were of a Roman villa discovered and a coin treasure was buried between 260 and 270. Riemst was therefore to the highways of Bavay from Tongeren to Maastricht and Tongeren in Nijmegen. The area remained inhabited even after Roman times, as witnessed by Merovingian finds made during the demolition of the old church in 1907.
