Palitana is one of the most famous Jain pilgrimage centers in India. This is a small town located in the Indian state of Gujarat, famous for its temples, beaches and wildlife.
One of the main tourist attractions in Palitana is the Shatrunjaya Hill. Shatrunjaya means the ‘place of victory’. This is considered to be one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Jains. Adinatha, the first of the Jain tirthankaras, is said to have meditated on the Shatrunjaya hill. It is a long walk up the hill and you get a glimpse of the town’s beautiful landscape from the top. The Hill has more than 3000 temples, all carved in exquisite marble. These are great examples of ancient Indian architecture. The temples on the hill are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankars.
Palitana is the world’s only mountain that has a whopping 900 temples. The town has a unique history associated with Jainism. This was the first city in the world to itself legally vegetarian. Thousands of devotees flock to Palitana every year. With its abundance of hills and temples, the town has an otherworldly charm to it.
