Alsfeld

Alsfeld is a city inside the center of Hesse, in Germany. Large cities nearby are Bad Hersfeld approximately 33 kilometers to the east, Fulda 36 kilometers to the southeast, Giessen 47 kilometers to the west and Marburg an der Lahn about 36 kilometers to the northwest. Alsfeld is placed on the top a part of the Schwalm within the northern Vogelsberg and simply to the south of the Knull mountains at the western edge of the Alsfeld basin. In 1961, the city hosted the first Hessentag country pageant, in 1985 the twenty fifth. Alsfeld changed into first mentioned in a legitimate record in 1069.

Excavations inside the Walpurgiskirche have determined that a Roman church existed right here already within the 9^th and 10^th centuries. It is consequently envisioned that the city became founded in Carolingian times. Between 1180 and 1190 the Counts of Thuringia constructed a fort along the historical trading path of the Kurze Hessen. That region desired the improvement of Alsfeld and it was sooner or later documented as a town as early as 1222.
