Drive to Pondicherry enroute visit Mahabalipuram, the only surviving shore temple of India.
Visit Shore Temple (UNESCO World heritage site) and other heritage sites (Pancha Ratha, Varaha Cave Temple, Tiger Cave, Krishna Mandapam, Balancing rock, Arjuna's Penance). After lunch proceed to Pondicherry enroute visit Auroville or the City of Dawn, an international settlement where community living is the focus of life. Later in the evening stroll along the beach. Beach road in the evening is a refuge from the heat. Beach road has little of architectural interest but oceans of charm.
Visit Aurobindo Ashram, Ashram's handmade paper factory, Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Manakula Vinayagar Koil, Pondicherry Musuem, the Botanical Gardens and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Afternoon visit to Auroville commune (15 kms North of Pondicherry). Later proceed for a backwater cruise on Chunambar Lake. Chunambar Boat house offers facilities for boating, canoeing, etc. The backwaters and luxuriant greenery on both sides of the river provide an idyllic setting for boating. If you wish to spend some time in island beach, then please pack some snacking, fruits, juices and water bottles, though a small restaurant is available in chunnambar itself.
Pitchavaram is not only known for its backwaters but also for the mangrove forest trees permanently rooted in a few feet of water. This is considered as the healthiest mangrove occurrence in the world. The area is about 28 acres and is separtated from the sea by a sand bar, which is a patch of extraordinary loveliness. Some of the rare species like Avicennia and Rhisphara will be a special attraction to an Ornithologist. If you are lucky, numerous birds like watersnips, cormorants, Egrets, Storks, Herons, Spoonbills and Pelicans can be spotted.
Drive to Chennai enroute visit Dakshinachitra, a Craft village on east coast road where one can purchase authentic handcrafts from artisans. It’s time to bid farewell. Drive to Chennai Domestic Airport to connect flight to onward destination.
