Sao Luis Island

Sao Luis Island otherwise called Upaon-acu Island or Maranhao Island is an island in the territory of Maranhao, Brazil with a zone of 1,410 square kilometers 544 sq mi, situated between the Bay of San Marcos and the Bay of St. Joseph. There are 4 urban communities situated in the island Sao Luis, after which the island is named, Sao Jose de Ribamar, Paco do Lumiar, and Raposa. The city of Sao Luis likewise covers three more minor islands, Taua Mirim, Taua, and Medo. Raposa likewise has an island. Sao Luis is the capital of the state. Sao Luiz was established in 1612 by Daniel de la Ridiere, a French officer appointed by Henry IV of France to build up a settlement in this vicinity.
