Marienplatz is the most important and famous city square in Germany. Both old and new city hall are located here. The square once used to be the marketplace and host to many tournaments. The main attraction of the city hall is a Glockenspiel which was influenced by the tournaments and attracts many tourists. The name Marienplatz come from a Marian Column called Mariensaule which is situated in the center of the square. The column has on top of it a golden statue of Virgin Mary and was built to commemorate the end of Swedish Occupation. It truly is a beautiful symbol of peace and tranquility.
