They are not called the 'Eighth wonder of the world' for no reason. Situated inside the same rock from which they were carved out, rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are a marvel of architecture that are seldom paralleled even in the modern world. Some of these churches were built in 12th century during the rule of King Lalibela, and some were built earlier in the 10th century. There are in all 11 churches which are divided into three groups namely The Western Group, The Eastern Group and The Northern Group. Bete Medhane Alem, which is considered to be the largest monolithic church in the world is the main attraction of all.
