Alexander Nevski Cathedral

Built between 1882 and 1912, Alexander Nevski Cathedral has been a landmark for Sofia city. The Cathedral was constructed to commemorate the death of 200,000 Russian soldier who died fighting for Bulgaria against the Turkish Rule. The magnificent cross-domed basilica is a splendid example of Neo-Byzantine style. The main attraction of the cathedral is the gold plated dome on top of the cathedral that rises to a height of 41m. There is an Icon museum in the cathedral which has on display Icon paintings dating back between 9th and 18th century. However there is a small fee for entry to the museum. You can visit Alexander Nevski Cathedral on all days except Tuesday from 7 AM to 5.30 PM. The museum is only open from 10 Am to 6 PM.
