In recent years the tourism industry of Srilanka is getting richer with the uprising number of tourists visiting the country. As a result of this there is a growth in the number of boutique hotels, villas, and small independent hotels. Some of these hotels are really wonderful with their spacious accommodation, classy cuisines, and breathtaking ambiance.
Though there is a great similarity between Sri Lankan food and South Indian dishes yet the Sri Lankan dishes are quite unique and contain delicious flavor. These are the blending of different food habits changing the taste a lot. Maximum dishes contain heavy spices as well as variant flavor. Fish, coconut, and fried snacks are the most common elements of maximum dishes.
1. Fish Curry and Mixed Rice
This is the most common nutritious food in Sri Lanka, which comprises of rice and curry. However, the curry can be of a few common vegetables or of a delicious fish.
2. Deviled Sweet and Sour Fish Curry
This deviled Sri Lankan dish is quite rich and unique in taste. The deep fried fish is smothered in a sweet and sour sauce and then it is fried again for a while with red onions and banana peppers.
3. Chili Fish Curry
The curry is quite spicy and delicious. It contains an edible smell and it is quite oily. The fish is obviously deep fried. Taste it with a bowl of rice.
4. Sri Lankan Daal Curry
Daal is almost a kind of staple food in Sri Lanka. This delicious dish is prepared mixing coconut milk with it. Taste it with rice.
5. Jackfruit Curry
Though it is a fruit indeed but before get ripened the young jackfruits are cut into chunks and cooked in different way gives an adorable smell. Sometimes it tastes like meat only.
6. Mallum or Mallung – Gotukola Sambol
Though Sri Lankan dishes are not very rich in green leafy vegetables but what it offers is superb. Mallum is in fact a green salad which is made with shredded coconut meat, finely chopped gotukola, red onions, and a few common spices.
7. Beetroot Curry
How delicious a beetroot can be, if you do not taste the curry you won’t believe! It makes a Sri Lankan dish complete. Beats are chopped up nicely and along with a number of spices, curry leaves, and cinnamon are added. But, taste it only with rice. That will give a different taste.
8. Vegetarian Kottu
Kottu is a common Sri Lankan dish available in both vegetarian and non-veg category. It is a street food of Sri Lanka. Basically the veg one is prepared with the small pieces of fried paratha bread of Sri Lanka. Later these are fried adding different spices and meats or vegetables.
