The Velliangiri Mountains are situated at the Western Ghats border of Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. Vellingiri trek is one of the best treks through pristine forests to reach a Siva Temple. In the 6 feet wide cave temple, Lord Shiva graces the devotees as Pancha-Five Lingas. He is a swayambumurthi. Two rocks on either side of the shrine appear as natural Dwarapalakas-securities.
Known as the "Thenkailayam - Kailash of the South", these mountains are most powerful place on the planet - Mount Kailash, the legendary abode of Lord Shiva. Shiva is known as Swayambhu, the source of the creator. Thenkailaya yatra has become significant and great possibility for worshipers. There are seven hills here. It is said that Mother Sita performed penance on Lord Shiva at the fifth hill.
The season that is suitable for trekking this mountain is from Feb to May, and one has to be careful about Elephants near Bamboo Trees and other animals. Ascending on the Velliangiri Hill gives the devotee the benefit of one-year physical exercise through the breathing of the air carrying the medicinal effect of herbals. People pray here for the cure from prolonged and serious diseases. The Velliangiri Mountains are considered holy and worshipped by the people of Attappady.
