In the Middle Ages, Bischofsheim turned into ruled by way of the Archbishop of Mainz, but fell to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1579. In 1930 it become integrated to the city of Mainz, final a constituent community of that metropolis until 1945. Due to its infrastructure Bischofsheim became subject to air raids bombing of Mainz in World War II. Since the American and French occupying powers severed the hyperlinks among Mainz and the so-known as Rechtsrheinische Stadtteile von Mainz the Rhine was the boundary between their occupational zones those six communities efficiently ceased to be part of the metropolis of Mainz.
Whereas the three former constituent groups north of the Main were administered via Wiesbaden since then, Bischofsheim and neighbouring Ginsheim-Gustavsburg another time have become independent municipalities in Grob-Gerau district. Bischofsheim's civic coat of arms may heraldically be described thus: Party in step with fess, above, a lion rampant striped alternately three instances argent and three times gules, armed and topped Or, langued gules, below, a pair of pince-nez eyeglasses with frame sable.
