Even though the population settled around the 1st century, the town simplest started out to grow a good deal later. From across the fifth century onwards, the unique city began to expand around a church dedicated to Saint-Martin-l'Espagnol.
During the 12th century walls were built around the metropolis and during the Hundred Years' War a 2nd wall changed into built. These fortifications no longer exist and have been replaced with the aid of boulevards. The commune was named "Brive" until 1919, while it become renamed "Brive-los angeles-Gaillarde". The word "Gaillarde" still used in present day French in all likelihood stands for bravery or electricity in the town's call, but it can also talk over with the city's partitions. Brive now extends out of doors of its unique barriers into Malemort and Ussac. It is one of the great place.
