Nariyal Purnima

Nariyal Purnima is the day of fishermen, who typically rely on sea for their life. According to the Hindu Calendar, the auspicious eve of the full-moon day in the pious month of Shravan is chosen as the day to celebrate it along Mumbais coastline, Juhu Beach, Maharashtra.

During the actual day, both males and females of the Koli fisher community offer a fragrant bowl of coconut rice, the dish of the day to the God of the Sea, Lord Varuna. It is believed that in epic Ramayana, he held aloft the bridge that further helped Lord Rama to ahead towards Lanka. Therefore, in his honor garlands of flowers are thrown into the water and pleasingly bejeweled boats also carry lit oil lamps go out of the sea. However, the community gathering also decorate their boats, paint them and put flags on them, and thus enjoy singing and dancing.

Coconut is considered to the the purest offering for the god. It is so because it has three eyes that represents Lord Shiva, the three eyed God. Moreover, its water and kernel help them successfully earning his divine blessings to live a happy life. So, we can only hope that you come here in future, enjoy the festivities and go back with pieces of coconut distributed as prasad.
