About Hawick

Hawick is a town in the Scottish Borders gathering territory and noteworthy province of Roxburghshire in the east Southern Uplands of Scotland. It is 10.0 miles south-west of Jedburgh and 8.9 miles south-southeast of Selkirk. It is one of the most remote towns from the ocean in Scotland, in the core of Teviotdale, and the greatest town in the previous area of Roxburghshire. Hawick's design is particular in that it has numerous sandstone structures with slate rooftops. The town is at the juncture of the Slitrig Water with the River Teviot. Hawick is known for its yearly Common Riding, for its rugby group Hawick Rugby Football Club and for its knitwear industry.

At the 2001 enumeration Hawick had an occupant populace of 14,801. By 2011, this had lessened to 14,294. The west end of the town contains "the Mote", the remaining parts of a Norman motte-and-bailey. In the focal point of the High Street is the Scots baronial style town lobby, worked in 1886, and the east end has an equestrian statue, known as "the Horse", raised in 1914. Drumlanrig's Tower, now a historical center, dates to a great extent from the mid-sixteenth century. In 2009 another landmark the "Turning of the Bull" craftsman, Angela Hunter, Innerleithen, Scotland was revealed in Hawick. This landmark portrays William Rule turning the wild bull as it was charging King Robert the Bruce, in this manner sparing the lord's life and starting the Scottish Clan of Turnbull.
