Start early for our long and spectacular drive to Lachen (125km-6-7hrs drive). As we depart from Gangtok, we stop at Tashi View Point for views of mountains and the town. Along the way, pass through Kabi Lungtsok, Naga Waterfall, Seven Sisters Waterfall, so named because it comprises seven separate cascading segments and arrive at Chungthang village. Our ride through the lower Himalayas into the upper ridges of the Himalayas is breathtaking as we pass through many waterfalls that dot this scenic route and vegetation and climate changes rapidly as you ascend up the narrowing road. Chungthang is a small town surrounded by high mountains and is located at the confluence of Lachen and Lachung Chu(rivers). According to legend Chungthang was the meeting place of Guru Rimpoche and Lepcha Chieftain Thekung Tek. The region is predominately a Lepcha area. From here the road bifurcates for the Lachen and Lachung valleys and we take the western road to Lachen. Lunch will be served at Namok (A Wayside Inn). Arrive in Lachen by evening. Lachen means a high pass and its’ township is located at an alt of 2735m. The area has been opened only recently and it is also the base for trekking and mountaineering expeditions.Overnight in best available lodge (simple guest houses with basic amenities are found here).
Day 2: Lachen - Chopta Valley - Gurudongmar Lake - Lachung
After breakfast depart for Thangua and Chopta Valley. Thangu valley occupies a very broad valley at the junction of Thangu Chu, Chopta Chu, and Lassur Chu (rivers). It is situated at an altitude of 14000ft.In the summer months (June & July), the valley is carpeted with multi-hued colors of wild flowers. The Alpine meadows are dotted with some wooden houses and yaks are seen grazing around. Tsopta or Chopta Valley makes for a pleasant walk, with blooming rhododendrons and other flowers making the scene pretty. From here, if the weather permits and if we can get permit go beyond, we will depart for Gurudongmar Lake (17,200 ft). After spending short time here, we drive to Lachen for late lunch. After lunch drive to Lachung
Day 3: Lachung - Yumthang Valley Excursion - Gangtok
After breakfast depart for Yumthang, about 25kms away from Lachung, through picturesque landscapes filled with various types of rhododendrons and various species of orchids which bloom in different color and so it is rightfully called the valley of flowers. Yumthang valley is near the tree line, with yaks grazing and its meadows are carpeted with flowers against the backdrop of towering peaks that appear to touch the skies. Depending on the weather conditions, we will spend time walking and enjoying the landscape.There is hot springs, known for their curing properties. Return to Gangtok.
