About Grahamstown Festival

Grahamstown Festival happens to be one of the largest and most colourful arts events in South Africa. This event was first held in the year 1974 and since then it has been a platform that offers a choice of the very best of both indigenous and international talent.

Being one of the most diverse festivals in the world, the Grahamstown Festival includes art forms like- theatre, dance, opera, cabaret, fine art, craft art, classical music, jazz, poetry readings, lectures and other operatic productions. Several hundred shows are staged in Grahamstowns many parks, church halls and restored Victorian buildings, and span every type of performance, from traditional Xhosa dance to New Orleans cabaret.

Over 50 000 people flock to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape every year to be a part of this fiesta of art. With over 500 shows in the pipeline, the otherwise quiet parks and market corners of Grahamstown become abuzz with art enthusiasts. Organized by the Grahamstown Foundation, this festival has in store something for everyone- right techno raves, medieval banquets, craft fairs, cyber cafes, carnivals, buskers to walking tours.
