The medieval Khajuraho temple complex of Madhya Pradesh that spreads across 20 sq km is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Chandela rulers over a period of 200 years from 950 to 1150 BC these temples are the most visited monuments in India after Taj Mahal. Out of the original 85 temples only 22 are in reasonable state of preservation. The brilliance of the architecture lies in the fact that mortar was not used to keep the huge blocks of sandstones together.
