Mullerthal also known as La Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise or Little Switzerland is located in the canton of Echternach in Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The Mullerthal forms a part of the cross-border German-Luxembourg Nature Park. The region is characterized by the picturesque wooded valleys with romantic creeks, its rugged verdant terrain and natural riches: forests of beech, hornbeam, silver birch, pine and oak, carpeted by ferns, heather and myrtle, raging torrents and wetlands. The presence of strange rocks throughout the forest adds to the landscapes charm. The Suer River which runs through this area forms a natural border between Luxembourg and Germany.
Widely popular activity is renting a canoe and rafting. Along the river you can easily find a number of well-equipped campsites. However, in the summer months, some of them can be quite busy. So it is better to make a reservation in advance. The Luxembourg's highest waterfall known as the Schiessemtumpel is also situated here. The region is ideal for walking, hiking and mountain biking. The Mullerthal trail, a famous marked hiking trail is also very popular amongst tourists. You can walk through the sandstone forest labyrinth admiring the beauty of nature.
Besides the trekking trail, there are several places to visit here including the Abbey Museum, the Prehistoric museum and the Rural Archeology Museum. It also hosts the annual St Willibrord dancing procession. Larochette is the second largest city in the area and is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can discover the ruins of the Larochette castle. The town also hosts the European Ballooning Championships every summer. If you like to be in the nature, this is definitely the place for you, so relax, take a deep breath and be active and enjoy the landscape and at the same time experience something exciting here.
