Conceived as the 'Universal Town', the Auroville Ashram is an experimental township whose purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity. The architecture of the city is as interesting as the concept. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa known as "the Mother", situated in Viluppuram district.
The main attraction here is the "Matrimandir" -one can watch an introductory video about the concept of the city.It is a place to stay and soak in the spirit of doing the things one really loves. The tourists indulge in delicious organic food, volunteer, cherish the freedom, and live a little. One can participate in guest introduction tours or other programmes, eat at the community dining hall, and get a feel of the place. There are plenty of things to try, learn and experience during the stay in Auroville; foreign movie screenings at the town hall, eco-movie screenings at Sadhana Forest, pizza nights with the Youth Club, discussions on Auroville-related subjects, pottery classes, yoga classes, short-term volunteering in schools, farms, forests and conservation initiatives, language and dance classes, and more.
