Pilar do Sul

Pilar do Sul is a municipality in the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil. It is part of Sorocaba's metropolitan area. The population is 28,309 2015 est. In the area of ​​681.12 km². The height is 689 meters. The history of Pilar Do Sul city started in 1850, when the dispute, hunters and miners passed through this area to discover precious metals. The name of this place can be taken from the fact that many families from Minas Gerais came to the area to get the stone that they used to make pestle to tender the meat. The word "pillar" in Portuguese means "pestle." Local stone was also used to reduce the skin of hunting animals.

Another potential source of the city's name can be derived from the righteousness of the Minas Gerais families, who was very devoted to a Spanish saint, our Lady of Pillar. The development of the city was slow during the twentieth century. With the formation of a pieded city district in 1934, poor roads and sluggish growth of agriculture resulted in a halt and political autonomy. On November 5, 1936, Pillar retrieved his autonomy as a city. In March of the following year, Eugenio Theodoro Sobrinho took the position as the first elected mayor. In the same year, the House of Councilors passed a law that gave land to all those who wanted to build any kind of buildings within the city. In 1944, the city officially changed its name to "Pillar do Sul".
