About Essex
Essex was ten squares, running from Mace Avenue to Marlyn Avenue. It was started in 1909 by the Taylor Land Company for those occupants in Baltimore who needed a place outside as far as possible to maybe grow a garden or to seek after some other provincial movement. Land was shoddy and deals were improved by a limited time flyer.
Henry Guttenberger manufactured the principal general store in Essex in 1910 at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Mace Avenue. In the vicinity of 1911 and 1912, the Taylor Land Company gave the parcels for Essex Methodist and St. John's Lutheran holy places. They likewise gave the land where the volunteer fire office manufactured their station. The lasting flame station opened in 1921.
