About Glarus
Glarus is the capital of the canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Since 1 January 2011, the municipality Glarus incorporates the previous municipalities of Ennenda, Netstal and Riedern. Glarus lies at the river Linth between the foot of the Glarnisch to the west and the Schilt to the east. Very few buildings built earlier than the fireplace of 1861 stay. Wood, fabric, and plastics, as well as printing, are the dominant industries. The symbol of the metropolis is the neo-romanesque metropolis church. The respectable language of Glarus is German, but the major spoken language is the local Alemannic Swiss German dialect.
Glarus is first referred to within the early ninth Century in Latin as Clarona. In 1178 it become first referred to in German as Glarus. On 10 February 878, the Emperor Charles the Fat gave his spouse Richgard or Richardis the monasteries of Sackingen, of St. Felix and of Regula in Zurich as a royal property. This land grant covered giant political rights and a large property. This estate protected land within the Rhine and Frick valleys, the southern Hotzenwald, land in Zurich, along Lake Walen and the valley of Glarus. Glarus remained beneath the Säckingen Abbey until 1395, when the Glarus valley broke far from the Abbey and have become independent.
