Then travel along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea to the Haast Pass, gateway to World Heritage Westland National Park. Continue up the West Coast past spectacular mountain ranges, native forests and lakes to the glacier region of Fox and Franz Josef.

Leave the Glacier Region today travelling north through scenic thick forests and pass flowing rivers towards the town of Hokitika. Continue north along the West Coast to reach Kumara Junction where you join SH73 turning inland towards the town of Kumara and along the Taramakau River to Otira. The route known as Arthur/’s Pass was first used by Maori tribes crossing to the west coast to find pounamu (jade). Today it is a sophisticated mountain pass, memorable for its breathtaking scenery as well as its civil engineering. Arthur/’s Pass road is the shortest route across the Southern Alps, but it is also the highest, offering some of the best scenery to be found on any New Zealand road. Lakes Pearson and Grasmere provide good photo opportunities along the way. Make the descent towards Porter/’s Pass and the rural serenity of friendly towns which lead across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.
Leave Christchurch and head north via the Alpine Pacific Touring Route past the beach townships of Woodend, Waikuku, Leithfield and Amberley. The route takes in the wine growing area of Waipara before reaching the seaside township of Kaikoura, an area steeped in Maori History and Legend.


Kaikoura, a unique combination of ocean and mountains, is famous for its amazing eco-tourism, including Whale Watching and Dolphin swimming anytime of the year! Kaikoura often hosts the world/’s largest dolphin - the Orca - and is home to the world/’s smallest and rarest - the Hector. Kaikoura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland New Zealand including 13 species of Albatross, 14 varieties of Petrels and 7 types of Shearwater. The name Kaikoura literally means food - kai, and crayfish - koura, an industry that continues to thrive in the region thanks to this natural phenomenon.
