About Wilmington
The city was based on the site of Fort Christina, the principal Swedish settlement in North America. It is at the juncture of the Christina River and Brandywine River, close where the Christina streams into the Delaware River.
It is the district seat of New Castle County and one of the real urban areas in the Delaware Valley metropolitan territory. Wilmington was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his companion Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was the executive in the rule of George II of Great Britain.
