About Lead
The city was formally established on July 10, 1876, after the revelation of gold. The city was named for the leads or jackpots of the stores of significant ores.9 It is the site of the Homestake Mine, the biggest, most profound 8,240 feet 2,510 m and most profitable gold mine in the Western Hemisphere before shutting in January 2002.
Lead was established as an organization town by the Homestake Mining Company, which ran the adjacent Homestake Mine. Phoebe Hearst, spouse of George Hearst, one of the principals, was instrumental in making Lead more decent. She built up the Hearst Free Public Library around the local area, and in 1900 the Hearst Free Kindergarten.
