About Easter Island

Easter Island is a Polynesian island situated on the southeastern end of the group. This volcanic island is famous for the mystery filled statues lying all over the island. The statues were created by Rapanui people of South America and these statues are found all over the island. The easter island statues are famously referred to as 'Easter island Heads' as one just finds half of the upper torso of the statues . There are also few standing statues but they are buried till the neck portion with the passage of time. The stone works which date back to somewhere around 400 CE have earned the island the designation of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Easter Island is found in the world's most isolated corner. This island also earns the rapport of being the most mysterious. Easter Island is tucked in between Chile and Tahiti. The triangular shaped island is made mostly of volcanic rock. Small coral formations exists along the shoreline. The coastline of Easter island has many volcanic caves. Mystery Behind the 1000 Giant Statues The first question which haunts the mind is that from where did these ancient people come from? If yes then how did they transport almost 1,000 giant statues from the quarry to their platforms? Where is the Quarry from which these stones were transported from? What devastating event caused them to overthrow all they had erected with so much effort? And most important of all what do these statues signify? Or what it all means? Sixty-three square miles in size and nestling three extinct volcanoes in its womb (the tallest rising to 1674 feet) the island is, a single massive volcano rising over ten thousand feet from the Pacific Ocean floor. This is all what is known of this island till date but the mystery mystifies with each passing days with travelers giving vivid accounts about their visits full of thrill and mystery. This is truly one of the most enchanting places on earth.
