Governador Nunes Freire

Governador Nunes Freire is a Brazilian municipality placed inside the micro-place of Gurupi, inside the western country of Maranhao. Governor Nunes Freire became created by using State Law no. 6.174, dated November 10, 1994, whilst it became dismembered from the municipality of Candido Mendes. It is known by way of locals, truckers and older humans for its vintage call of Encruzo. The municipality is the seat of the Planning Region of Baixo Turi.

The toponym is a posthumous tribute to Osvaldo da Costa Nunes Freire, a health practitioner and politician from Maranhao. He became Federal deputy for Maranhao from 1967 to 1975 and Governor of Maranhao from March 31, 1975 to March 15, 1979. The nomination to the authorities of Maranhao by means of the celebration of former senator Vitorino Freire of whom the Sarney group changed in the authorities. In territorial division dated of 2001, the municipality is made from the district headquarters. The municipality is in severe conurbation with the neighboring city Maracacume.
