Be prepared for a long journey to Uyuni today. You head off in a southwesterly direction towards Oruro, a 3.5 hour bus ride, and then take the train to Uyuni, a 6 - 7 hour ride across the massive altiplano plateau. Overnight in a hotel in Uyuni: lunch included.
You will stop at the town of Colchani, located at the edge of the salt flats and whose inhabitants mine salt. Afterwards, you venture into the salt flats, a natural wonder of more than 12,000 km2 and one of Bolivia’s most impressive places. The adventure continues to the Incahuasi Island (2 hour drive), a volcanic rock outcropping where immense cacti grow. After this amazing site, you are driven north to see the Coquesa mummies at a spot at the foot of the Tunupa Volcano. Finally, you return to Uyuni. You will cross the Andes by bus, passing lovely countryside, old mines, and indigenous villages. Once you reach Potosi, you will take a city tour and see its historic sections, visiting the national mint, Colonial era churches, and the City Market. You will visit the Cerro Rico mines to learn more about silver production (3 hours). In the afternoon, there is another 3 hour bus ride to Sucre, a beautiful Colonial city located in the valley. Overnight in a hotel in Sucre: includes breakfast.
The half day city tour starts in the morning with a visit to the cathedral and the Recoleta Church, both with museums. Then, it’s off to the cemetery and the ASUR Indigenous Textile Museum. The afternoon is free for your leisure.
