Stolin grew up at the coronary heart of the Polesia region at the Haryn River, on the crossroads of crucial routes, one main northwards to Pinsk, two others eastwards to Davyd-Haradok and Turaŭ, which might be now in Belarus, southwards to Sarny and Kiev, which can be now in Ukraine. Archaeological evidence shows that the place which Stolin now occupies, became settled as some distance back as the twelfth century AD. The first mention of Stolin dates to 1555. There are three stories regarding the origins of the call Stolin.
