The travel was well organized.. as per my itinerary.. a nice vehicle was provided.. an excellent driver cum guide was given.. my queries were all answered and their recommendation during the tour were all perfect..

We had a relaxed and enjoyable 9N holiday in Sri Lanka. As you may know we chose George Steuart Travels to arrange our holiday. Our pleasure on this trip was badly marred by providing us with the most unsuitable vehicle for all our land travels.You are aware our first E-Mail request for Lanka Tour stated that we are very senior citizens (age 76-83 yrs) and that my wife had walking and climbing difficulties (reason for ground floor rooms in Hotels without Lift) and that we wanted an a/c SUV (which means Sports utility vehicle). Against our requirements of a/c SUV,on Day 1 we were provided with a/c van by Nissan which none can deny is the most unsuitable van for any travel.This van was very high for older people to step up & in (my wife had to have a 5"-6" high platform to get on to the 1st step of the van before entering the cabin); it had hardly any gap even with door fully open for a person to get in to the 3rd row of seats after someone sat in the 2nd row of seats,it had only 1 sliding door on one side (God help you if you had an accident and the van turned on its left side-because none can ever come out of the van as there is no door on the rt. side of van) which made seating of 4 old people in the van without shifting and being lifted etc.Also it had no seatbelt on the 1st seat of the 2nd row. Lastly there were no handles above the door to hold on so that a person young or old can get in and take his seat. On Day-1 we somehow managed to get my wife into the van from the airport at about 1.00 pm and travelled to Kandy with 1/2 hr break for lunch en route and reached our Thilanka Hotel about 6.00 pm during which time unfortunately around 4.00 pm my wife had a serious impact injury in her back after being thrown off her seat onto the van floor when the driver suddenly braked hard,as there being no seatbelt to her seat-she was in extreme pains for 5-6 days thereafter and ruined her pleasure during the trip.During this entire time my wife had to remain seated in the (some snack for Lunch inside the van) van to avoid the fiasco of alighting and climbing back to her seat. On arrival at this Hotel we told the driver,Mr Hiran and Mr Tharindu that it was impossible to use this van for our travels and that they must replace with a more appropriate vehicle.After much time and more phone discussions I was told by Mr Tharindu that they could replace the van with an additional charge of LRs 8000 ( Mr Hiran at this stage remained conveniently uncontactable on phone). This was blackmail at its best as without a proper vehicle and my wife's accident we would have to cancel our trip for the sake of my wife's van travel ability and also our own safety. Anyway, we paid up LRs 8000 and got a new van the next day which was a vast improvement on the Nissan van but still very high platform to get in & out. My questions to G.S. Travels are : 1. Why was I blackmailed to pay for replacement of an unsuitable & unsafe van in which my wife had an accident? I had made clear re: my car requirements at start of this travel plan.The travel agent should have replaced the van without question or additional charge and in fact should have apologised for their oversight/callousness. Will G.S Travels give me the Names and E-Mail i.d.s of people above the age of 70 yrs who travelled long distances in the same Nissan van in the last 3 years? If not why not? 2. I could have sued the G.S.Travels for defficiency in service and compensation for my wife's injury,but could not/did not-as being in a foreign country on a short holiday. Thus my position was fully exploited by G.S. Travels. As for all other arrangements made by the agent we were quite happy with sightseeing itinery and the hotels accomodation etc. I hope our review for other potential tourists will highlight our plight and additinal cost incurred by us through no fault of ours.
