Mysuru Dasara the state of the festival of Karnataka called as Navrathri is celebrated for 10 days with great fervor in the city, and ends with the grand Dasara procession. It is that time of the year when the entire city of Mysuru lights up and processions, dance and many activities take place in the city.

 

The Dasara festivities have a rich history of more than 400 years and on this day the Mysuru palace gets lighted with around 100,000 bulbs and the whole city is beautifully decorated and attracts tourists from around the world. During this time one can indulge in various celebrations and cultural programmes happening in the span of 10 days within the city.

 

Mysore Dasara  procession on Vijayadashami one of the most frivolous event, also known as Jumbo Savari takes place on the streets of Mysuru city, the main attraction of this procession is the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, which is worshipped by the royal family and their invitees and later taken out for the procession placed in a golden howdah on the top of the elephant. Various dance groups, music bands, decorated horses and elephants form a part of the procession, which begins from Mysuru Palace and ends at Bannimantap, where Banni tree is worshipped the tree, which has great reference from the Mahabharata, and it is said that Pandavas used Banni tree to hide their weapons for around one year. So this made a tradition of kings during those years to worship the tree before going to any warfare.

 

This year they have a flea market and food mela, which were the new addition to the celebrations. Also, one can watch the 3D mapping projected at the Town hall and can have the best view of the city celebration by taking the open bus tour.

 

Not just that, the 10 days long celebration, ends with a bang on the last day and this year on 19th October 2018, enjoy the most famous Mysore Dasara procession, early afternoon and most charming torchlight parade in the evening.
