Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced that India’s first double-decker Shatabdi train will soon run between Mumbai and Goa. Mumbai to Goa is one of the most popular tourist circuits in the country and this service is meant to cater to the growing demand.
Speaking at an event to lay the foundation stone for George Fernandes Insititute for tunnel technology, Mr. Prabhu said, “One double-decker AC train between Mumbai and Goa should run as Shatabdi. We will make it happen as soon as possible. This would become the first-ever double-decker Shatabdi.” He also mentioned a special train to be started by the IRCTC along the Konkan railway route aimed at enhancing tourism.
Air-conditioned double-decker trains usually have modern amenities and are designed for comfortable travel. While there are other double-decker air-conditioned trains connecting several cities in India right now, this one will be the first Shatabdi. The Shatabdi Express, known for its speed and service, connects major cities of the country. It returns to its base station on the same day of its journey. Tourism pundits claim that this will be a boon to Goa tourism. Several travelers from across the world cover Goa and Mumbai as a circuit. Goa, being one of the party hot-spots of the country, is also arguably the most popular getaway from Mumbai.
