Airports in India have been spending huge money to upgrade their existing infrastructure. And the efforts have shown results Delhi and Mumbai airports have featured in the list of top 5 airports in the World in the 25-40 million passengers handling capacity category.
1. GOI is Considering for a New Airport Development Model
Government of India is considering for a new airport development model wherein Airports Authority of India (AAI) retains the complete ownership of an airport but privatizes most of the services. Currently, AAI runs majority of the airports in the country, but the state-owned entity is a minority equity partner with private companies in Mumbai and Delhi international airports. The National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016 had mentioned the possibility of the AAI giving out operations and maintenance for a cluster of existing or new airports.
The new development model will ensure that the AAI remains the major or sole owner of the airport to be modernized with most services being outsourced to private firms. The Aviation Ministry of India is planning to revive 50 non-operational airports of AAI at an indicative cost of INR 50-100 crore each in the next 3 years.
