One of the most award-winning musicals of the final decade is coming to Houston. The Drowsy Chaperone is described as a “meta-musical” because the musical consists of a display-within-a-show. The protagonist is a diehard Broadway addict who spends a quiet evening at home listening the soundtrack of his favourite musical, the fictitious Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens, the characters from the musical actually come to existence in his rental while the person narrates the movement for the target audience.
 
The Drowsy Chaperone is part love letter, component parody and sends up many of the tropes and cliches of musical theatre. In its run on Broadway, The Drowsy Chaperone earned 13 Tony Award nominations and won five for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by means of a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.
