The Messiaen Festival in Pays de la Meije
About The Messiaen Festival in Pays de la Meije
The Messiaen festival in Pays de la Meije was created in 1998 and pays tribute to the famous French composer, organist and pianist Olivier Messiaen. It takes place every year in La Grave, a small mountain village 1,500 metres above sea level, of which the composer was very fond. Today, the festival has become a major contemporary music event and attracts many music-loving tourists who come to listen to musical works outdoors and in the Church of La Grave.
Each new edition is an opportunity to listen to the piano works of Messiaen but also to discover artists from around the world. Botanical and ornithological hikes are also organised so visitors can discover the gorgeous landscapes that inspired Messiaen and delve into his creative world. Through conferences, round tables and educational workshops for children and adults, the festival aims to show that music is accessible to all. A rewarding and friendly experience where musicians, composers, music-lovers, students, volunteers and hikers come together in a natural setting overlooking the Meije glaciers.
