About Moors and Christians Fiesta
The festival of Moors and Christians is the most important event of the 12 months in Villajoyosa. The pageant has been held for over 250 years in honour of Santa Marta and commemorates activities which befell in 1538, whilst Berber pirates led by using Zalé-Arraez tried to attack Villajoyosa. According to legend, St. Martha got here to the rescue of the townsfolk by way of inflicting a flash flood which worn out the enemy fleet, hence preventing the corsairs from achieving the coast. To show their gratitude, the town made her its patron saint and keep this annual competition in her honour, the main occasion being a re-enactment of the Moorish landing.
