In 1604 CE, within the area of worship in which the Golden Temple now stands, Guru Arjan Dev, the Sikhs’ fifth Guru, mounted the Adi Granth, a newly compiled volume of scripture. It consisted of the hymns of the first five Gurus plus those of other Indian and Persian ‘saint-poets’ from the Hindu and Muslim traditions. After the alternatives have been made, the Guru dictated the hymns to Bhai Gurdas, who wrote down the phrases and music of the Adi Granth. Guru Arjan later suffered a martyr’s demise, preferring to shop his existence as opposed to make alterations to the hymns, as required by using Emperor Jahangir.
Having compiled the Granth, the Guru located it in the newly-constructed Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. He nominated Bhai Buddha because the custodian of the Granth. The Guru bowed before the collection, acknowledging the better authority of the written words to the personal importance and significance which he possessed as Guru. After this time, he not sat at a stage above the Granth, however under it. He also instituted each day public worship at the Harmandir Sahib, wherein the Granth changed into recited all day long to the accompaniment of stringed musical contraptions.
