About Festivities Of San Jorge
Every year, Caceres, in Extremadura, celebrates the festivity in honour of its patron saint, San Jorge the Spanish name for Saint George, in the week of 23 April. The festival symbolises the Christian reconquest of the metropolis, and combines historical information like the dispute among Muslims and Christians with legends which includes Saint George's victory over the dragon. The streets of the city are decked out for the festivities, and the activities include the 'burning of the dragon' in the Plaza Mayor rectangular and dramatised re-enactments of the warfare between the Muslims and Christians. There are also processions to the shrine of the Virgin of La Montana, a bonfire competition, and the search for the golden hens, golden eggs that are hidden across the city. The Moor and Christian fiestas in honour of San Jorge Martir are staged in Ca ceresfrom 23 April every yr. Another celebration takes place the primary weekend of September with the fiestas of Moors and Christians in honour of the Relic of San Jorge. Those of April were held considering time immemorial, and those of the Relic because 1780 whilst the relic of the Patron Saint was acquired from Rome.
