The tour starts depending on your flight arrival schedule. Once you arrive to Shuangliu International Airport, your driver and English-speaking guide will pick you up at the Arrivals Hall with a board with your name. You will then be chauffeured to Chengdu city centre. First you will visit Jinli Old Street. The ancient style of the compound architecture in this street shows how old Chengdu looked like during the Qing Dynasty. Here you can sample some local snacks which are unique in China. Then you will walk the Broad and Narrow Alley, part of the Chengdu Historical and Cultural Protection Project. These reconstructed alleys have plenty of traditional courtyards, called Siheyuan in Chinese, where relevant Chinese citizens have lived before. Finally, you will enjoy a traditional dinner in a local Chinese restaurant, and then be dropped-off at your hotel. In the morning you will be picked-up in your hotel and chauffeured to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, located at Dujiangyan, 1.5 hours away from Chengdu. This Panda Centre has three sections: A Breeding Area, a Semi-Wild Reintroduction Area, and a Reintroduction Area. Youll have the opportunity to meet the panda keepers who work to create a natural environment for Chinas most beloved animals, and receive a short training session on how to deal with the pandas. After that, you can participate in two panda feedings one in the morning and one in the afternoon washing and carrying fresh bamboo for them, and preparing food like fruit, carrots and panda cakes. These nutritional treats are made with shredded bamboo mixed by hand with rice and egg to create a large, solid cake. The pandas love them! After your first volunteer session, enjoy a Chinese local lunch prepared for you at the centers cafeteria. Then you will spend about an hour visiting the panda gardens before you resume your volunteer work. In the afternoon, youll help clean the pandas indoor and outdoor enclosures, and depending on the caretaker’s schedule perhaps you may have a chance learn to record panda behavior or even assist with weighing the pandas. You’ll receive a volunteer certificate and the satisfaction of contributing to a great causeafter the full day helping out with these animals. The day ends at a local Chengdu restaurant where you will have Hotpot, the most famous and favorite dish in Chengdu. You will taste the strong flavor ma and la. Laterally, ma means numbness in the mouth, and la is chili spicy. You will be adding vegetables and meat to the pot, so everyone will turn into a chef at the table. In the morning you will be picked-up in your hotel and chauffeured to the Leshan, 3 hours away from Chengdu. In ancient times Leshan was reputed as the place with the most beautiful landscape in all Sichuan Province and it is famous for its abundance of the Chinese flowering crab-apple. When you arrive to Leshan city, you will visit the Giant Buddha, a 71-metre high (233 feet) stone statue built between 713 and 803 during the Tang Dynasty. The statue is carved out of a cliff, facing the sacred Emei Mountain and with a river flowing below its feet. This is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was a monk called Hai Tong who initiated the project to build this Buddha. He decided to carve a statue besides the river thinking that the Buddha would bring the water spirit under control and prevent boating accidents happening by the tempestuous waters. The fallen stones dropped during the carving actually reduced the water force and therefore the Buddhas task was accomplished. After a Chinese lunch in a local restaurant, you will go back to Chengdu, where you will visit Wenshu Monastery. Its thebest-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu, housing interesting artwork and relics including a skull of Xuan Zhang, a renown monk of the Tang Dynasty. Since the Tang (618907) and Song Dynasties (9601279), over 500 pieces of painting and calligraphy by celebrities have been stored here.
