Begin your getaway in Pune with a trip to the Aga Khan Palace. This sprawling mansion is often associated with the Indian freedom struggle and Mahatma Gandhi. This is the location where Gandhiji was incarcerated during the Quit India Movement. From the palace, you could make your way to the Pataleshwar Temple, an 8th century rock cut temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Strikingly similar to the Ellora Caves, the temple boasts of intricate carvings and a monolithic shivalinga. Situated in the city centre, the temple is an oasis of calm that draws tourists and Puneites alike.
Another popular tourist draw in Pune is Shaniwarwada. Built in the 18th century by the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire, this palace fort was the seat of power in the region and dominated the city skyline for over a century until it was burnt down in a mysterious fire. The stone base of the palace and its fortifications still exist and offer a glimpse into the past of Pune and the Maratha Empire. Pune is also home to scores of ancient temples. You could visit the Chaturshingi Temple, the Sarasbaug Ganapathi Temple or the Sri Mahalaxmi Temple.
