The smallest hill station in India, Matheran is a picturesque town in the lap of the Western Ghats that dates back to the British Raj. The town was founded in the 1850s as a summer resort town for British Officers and still offers rest and respite from the heat of the plains. Matheran is a popular weekend getaway destination for the denizens of Mumbai and Pune.
On your first day in Matheran, we recommend you explore the town and wander through the winding paths that criss cross the forest.
On your itinerary should be Porcupine Point that is indisputably the best spot in the own to watch the sunset, One Tree Hill which as the name suggests is a hill with one tree, Panorama Point and Luisa Point. Another attraction is Charlotte Lake, the main source of freshwater for Matheran. You will also find the oldest temple in the town, dedicated to Lord Shiva, on the shores of the Lake.
Watch the sun rise over the hills and enjoy a lazy brunch at the hotel. Take a walk down Mall Road, the main thoroughfare in Matheran. Sample the fare at the restaurants and bakeries that line the street and shop for trinkets.
Try a freshly made vada pav and some steaming hot tea, a Matheran specialty, before you head back home
