About Shiwa Ngandu

In Zambias eastern region, around the shores of Lake Shiwa Ngandu, is the Shiwa Ngandu Estate. Established by Sir Stewart Gore-Brown in 1914, the property was originally built as a private residence and a prospective farm. You can reach here either by taking a chartered flight or for a more reasonable option, fly into the Lusaka International Airport where you can hire a car and settle in for a challenging 10 hour drive.

Beyond a personal retreat, Gore-Browns family has long welcomed passing travelers to spend the night. As transportation developments have allowed for ease of access, the site has become a high-class destination. The estate offers luxurious accommodations, adventurous activities, and abundant amenities. With the Shiwa Ngandu Estate having been well-preserved throughout its storied history, a stay in the main building provides guests with a unique place to spend the night. The rooms are outfitted with traditional yet comfortable furnishings, historic decorations, and all the facilities necessary for an enjoyable visit. You can venture into a number of day trips into the varying Zambian landscapes.

You can visit the Kapishya Hot Springs and soak in a natural pool with water temperatures hovering above 100F (38C). For those with a penchant for wildlife viewing, explore Shiwa Ngandus 39 square miles (100km2) of terrain by way of horse safaris. The property holds some 22 different species of mammals including antelopes, zebras etc. For the more passive nature lover, skip saddles and strap into a decent pair of shoes. The areas most popular hike is the 3 hour Nachipala Bareback Hill trail. From the summit of the hill, hikers will be able to check out the extensive landscape, which extends across the scrubby plains and towards Lake Ishiba Ngandu.
