About Khao Lak-Lum Ru National Park

This is the 66th national park of Thailand established on August 30, 1991 covering an area of 125 square kilometers. The park comprises of quite a few mountains such as Sang Tong Mountain, Lam Ru Mountain, Lak Mountain, Prai Bang Toa Mountain, and Mai Kaeo Mountain. Maximum significant rivers of Phang Nga province originates here in the highest peak of this park which is about 1,077 meters above the sea level. Phang Nga River and Ta Kua Pa River are the most prominent rivers of this area. There are some other streams and many small canals which originate from the same mountain peak.
Climate
Being situated in the western coast of Andaman sea the park area is highly influenced by the southwestern monsoon wind and northeastern monsoon wind. As a result of this, it rains here almost all year round. There are basically two seasons in this region- from January till April it is hot season and rainy season starts from May and continues till December, when a heavy rainfall starts.
Flora and Fauna
Maximum part of the park is coated with Tropical evergreen forest. Some is still unspoiled, whereas in other areas human intrusion has distorted the forest composition. In some parts of the park the rubber plantations or fruit trees have replaced the original forest. The major tree species include; Syzygium sp, Alstonia scolaris, Dipterocarpus sp, Michelia champaca, Anisoptera costata, Hopea odorata, Mimusops elengi, several palm Palmae species and Bamboo Gramineae. The park is rich in ious species of orchids and ferns.
Wild Animals
The wide iety of wildlife includes mammal animals like Binturong, Malaysian weasel, Drynaria, Colugo, bonii H. Christ and Bat. There are some big mammal animals like Malayan Tapir, and Sumatran serow which are very famous. There are some unique species of reptiles available in this park. If you are a nature lover, you must not miss to spot them. The iety includes Indian or Bengal Monitor, Snake such as Malayan pit viper, White-lipped pit viper, and Iridescent earth snake. The iety of birds include 108 families of birds such as White-bellied sea-eagle, Crested serpent-eagle, Scarlet Minivet and Emerald Dove. The big birds are available in 3 types, such as namely Oriental pied Hornbill, Bushy-crest Hornbill, and Homrai. The park is the home to 3 types of daytime butterflies including Stichophthalma godfreyi, Troides aeacus thomsoni, and Troides amphrysus ruficollis.
