If there is one place that could be called the mecca of devoutness, it is Ummayad Mosque in Damascus. It is situated in the old part of the capital city and is also famous because of its extraordinary look, given by its architect. It is a landmark of the capital city, and is acknowledged as the fourth-holiest place in Islam. Usually, referred to as the Great Mosque of Damascus, this Ummayad Mosque is very huge and considers as the oldest Muslim place of worship in the world. Besides, it is the first monumental work of architecture in Islamic history and it being a prominent gathering point to strengthen the Muslims faith after Mecca increases its relevance.

Furthermore, the religious importance of the Umayyad mosque was reinforced by its famed medieval manuscripts and thus ranking as a notable wonder of the world, owing to its scale of constructions and allure. It houses pious compositions which are thousand ages old and an ancient Aramaic temple devoted to the god Hadad. During the time of Romans, the Temple of Jupiter captured the area and this building was refurbished into a church in the 4th century. Since then, Muslims started praying in the eastern section and the Christians on the western end. While observing its environs, you may discover minarets in the southeastern corner, highlighting the Muslim tradition and called as the Minaret of Jesus.
