The ship that holds the museum was supposed to be the biggest and most magnificent royal warship ever build by human hands. But it was not to be. The 226 foot, 64 cannon warship named Vasa, sank even before it set sailing for her maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. The ship was recovered 333 years later in 1961 and was refurnished close to its original glory. It was opened as a museum in the year 1990. Vasa Museum is the most visited museum in Scandinavia and the only maritime museum of its kind in the world.
